- Avoriaz is one of our most popular family ski holidays, especially for those with young children. It's super child-friendly, great for beginners, and entirely car-free (except for the odd horse-drawn sleigh!)
- Zell Am See's natural beauty is hard to beat for a Christmas family ski holiday or New Year's getaway. Great for beginners and intermediates, it offers incredible family-friendly skiing and one of the best Christmas markets in Europe.

What time of year is best to book a family ski holiday?
- Christmas and New Year are ideal for those wanting to enjoy some skiing alongside wonderful winter activities like husky sledding, firework displays, ice skating, and meeting jolly old St. Nicholas!
- Half-term is the most reliable time of year for snow, but it can also be the busiest and most expensive. For trips during this time, we recommend looking for hidden gems or taking a trip to Italy, where schools haven't broken up.
- Easter comes right at the end of the ski season, which can mean snow becomes more limited, but if you choose a high-altitude resort, you'll still see plenty of white stuff before the season finishes!
What are the best ski resorts for families?
It all depends on when you're planning to go. With young kids, we recommend travelling outside of the school holidays, but for those with older children and teens, there are tons of great options:
- Christmas and New Year family ski holidays: Enjoy the magic of the festive period in Zermatt, Zell am See, and Chamonix
- February half term family ski holidays: Experience the season's heaviest snow dumps with family fun in Flaine, Wengen, and St Anton.
- Easter family ski holidays: The quietest time to travel with kids. We recommend going high-altitude with holidays in Tignes, Cortina d'Ampezzo, and Geilo.
How can I ski cheaply with family?
Avoiding the school holidays with young kids is the best way to save money on your ski trip, but if you need to travel during Christmas, half-term, and Easter, then opting for smaller resorts away from the big names or travelling further afield to countries such as Norway can ensure better deals and fewer crowds.
How to start skiing with kids?
We recommend booking a resort with gentle slopes and designated kids' zones, dressing them in good sets of layers, and enrolling them in ski school. Focus on making those first few ski days fun and exciting - with plenty of breaks to do other fun things such as skating, sledding, and exploring the area!
We've never been skiing as a family before, do you have any tips?
It's all about convenience and making the holiday easy and stress-free. Fortunately, many resorts offer hotels and other amenities designed for family skiing!
If you want to book the holiday yourself, we recommend:
- Choosing pleasant, sociable flight times that don't require super early or late departure times.
- Opting for a shuttle or private transfer can be slightly more expensive, but it does provide a level of comfort that a coach transfer cannot.
- Selecting a hotel close to the slopes/centre of the resort. The last thing you'll want to do is hike across town with your (and your kids) ski gear. Being close to the slopes makes it easier to hit the lifts and ski school in the morning. Meanwhile, being close to the resort centre can mean more bus links to the slopes and evening activities on your doorstep.

How much does a ski holiday cost for a family of four?

What is the best age to take a child skiing?
Before the age of six is often the best time to take your child skiing for the first time, but that said, you can learn to ski at any age.
Is skiing a good family holiday?
Yes! Skiing is a fantastic family holiday, especially for the adventurous! Combining lots of lovely outdoor time, quality moments together, and the opportunity to learn a new skill alongside your little ones, skiing is a fantastic option for a fun family holiday outside of the summer holidays.
Can I book ski school through Heidi?
Yes, you can! Many large resorts offer ski schools that provide group lessons, which can be booked on our website during checkout. For smaller resorts, for individual lessons, or if you need a bit of help and advice, just get in touch with our team at Heidi to discuss it further.
Are ski passes and ski hire cheaper for children?
Yes. Most resorts have varying child rates for ski passes and ski equipment hire. Can I save money at half-term by avoiding Saturday to Saturday bookings?
While you've got the right idea, this is the one time of year when it might not work. With half-term family ski holidays, flights are often better valued (by avoiding Saturdays), but accommodation prices can be higher. However, this varies between resorts and hotels, so it's still always worth trying to see if avoiding Saturday to Saturday works out cheaper!
Slightly shorter family ski trips are another way to save money, with 5 and 6-day holidays being particularly popular. For many families, that's plenty of skiing for little legs as well as working out a bit softer on the wallet!
Outside of skiing, what other activities are there for children on a family ski holiday?
We get it, kids have never-ending energy and excitement, so it helps to know what else you can do outside of enjoying the slopes (especially after hours). In the early afternoons and evenings, activities like dog sledding, horse and carriage rides, or even tobogganing can be great on-the-snow experiences for the little ones.
